Overview

Vertical SaaS covers industry-specific software purpose-built for particular sectors — healthcare (Veeva), restaurants (Toast), construction (Procore), legal, real estate, and dozens of other verticals. Unlike horizontal software, vertical SaaS deeply embeds industry workflows and, increasingly, integrated payments and fintech, creating sticky, high-value platforms.

Demand is driven by the digitization of every industry, the value of software tailored to specific workflows, and the powerful economics of embedding payments and financial services into vertical platforms (raising revenue per customer dramatically). It is a fragmented (by definition, across many verticals) but individually-consolidating category — vertical SaaS is one of the most attractive software strategies and a major focus of venture and growth investment.

Market snapshot

FragmentationFragmentedEstimate

Not sized separately. One classification covers every software publisher, so it cannot be split between vertical and horizontal products. Vertical software is the more defensible half commercially — a system built around one industry's workflow faces fewer competitors and far lower churn than a horizontal tool sold to everyone.
