Overview

Telecommunications Infrastructure covers the physical backbone of connectivity — cell towers and wireless infrastructure, fiber networks, satellites, submarine cables, and the specialized construction that builds them. It is the asset layer beneath the carriers, increasingly owned by infrastructure funds and REITs that have separated towers and fiber from the service providers that lease them.

Demand is driven by relentless data growth, 5G densification, fiber-to-the-home build-out, federal rural-broadband funding (the $42B BEAD program), and the rise of low-earth-orbit satellite constellations (Starlink, Kuiper). It is capital-intensive, recurring-revenue, and one of the most actively traded categories in infrastructure investing; telecom carrier services themselves are profiled under Technology (Telecommunications).

Market snapshot

FragmentationConsolidatingEstimate

Almost none of this sector is separately classified. Towers and fibre are owned by REITs and carriers and counted as real estate or telecom service, and the construction that builds them shares a classification with electric line work. The absence of figures here is a measurement gap, not a small industry — it is one of the most heavily traded infrastructure classes there is.
